Psalm 10
When Silence Feels Like Absence
There are moments when God’s silence feels like abandonment. Yet, in those times, we are reminded that God sees everything. When evil goes unchecked, when the wicked prosper, and when the vulnerable suffer—our hearts may echo the opening cry of Psalm 10:
“Why, O Lord, do you stand far away?
Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1)
These words are not irreverent. They are honest. This psalm gives voice to the wounded soul struggling to make sense of a world where justice feels delayed and God seems distant. It provides assurance that God sees and understands.
A Bold and Broken Cry
Psalm 10 lays out a sobering picture of evil. The wicked are arrogant, self-assured, and convinced that God does not see or care. They prey on the vulnerable, twist justice, and claim victory over the innocent.
“In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor…
He says in his heart, ‘God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.’” (Psalm 10:2, 11)
These verses mirror modern injustice—oppression, abuse of power, and the silence of those who could speak up but do not. But the psalmist does not turn away from the pain or pretend it is not real. He brings it into God’s presence and pleads for divine action, trusting that God sees the suffering.
But You Do See
Everything shifts in verse 14:
“But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,
that you may take it into your hands.”
The psalmist transitions from lament to confidence. God may seem hidden, but He is not blind. He may appear silent, but He is not still. God notes every injustice. He hears every cry. And He will act.
This is a healing truth for those who feel overlooked by others or betrayed by systems meant to protect. The God of Psalm 10 is not detached from suffering. He is deeply involved, and God sees all that happens.
Justice Belongs to the King
The final verses are a declaration of faith in God’s rule and compassion:
“The Lord is king forever and ever…
O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will strengthen their heart;
you will incline your ear.” (Psalm 10:16–17)
Psalm 10 doesn’t end with revenge. It ends with a restored vision of God’s reign. He is a King who strengthens the afflicted, listens to the cries of the broken, and defends the fatherless, ensuring that His eyes see justice.
This is not just a psalm of protest. It is a psalm of profound trust. In the absence of immediate justice, the psalmist places his hope in the unchanging character of God.
